PELHAM, AL - The Springtime in the South has always been a wet season but this year it seems to be wetter than most, or at least on the weekends. Over the last few weeks rain has played a factor in every race weekend for the Mullinax Racing team, preventing them from racing for most of the month.
On the first weekend of April the Mullinax Racing team had planned to travel to Wythe, Virginia, followed by Tazewell, Tennessee for rounds six and seven of the Schaeffer's Oil Spring Nationals Series. Just before the team was scheduled to leave the shop to make the trip, they got word that the race in Wythe had been rained out, with the Tazewell race being called off shortly after.
Then the following Spring National's race weekend was also under threat of rain for all three days and races. On Wednesday, April 26th, Crossville Speedway announced that their race the following day was to be canceled due to rain.
Luckily for the team this news had come early enough that they did not head out for the trip just yet and were able to adjust their plans. The team then loaded up on Thursday to spend the afternoon and night driving up to Somerset, Kentucky for the next day's race at Lake Cumberland Speedway.
On the trip up to Lake Cumberland, the team experienced lots of rain and on Friday morning they woke up to the news that the race had been rained out. That day they traveled to Clarksville to drop off the trailer and get situated for Saturday's race.
On Saturday the prospect of racing looked good. The sun was out in the early morning and the chance of rain was low. Fifteen minutes before the driver's meeting a strong field of thirty-two cars had arrived to compete for the $10,053 prize.
Shortly before the drivers meeting, rain had unexpectedly moved in and progressively gotten harder throughout the afternoon. By 8:00 the rain had not dissipated, and the track was beyond saving, forcing the track to call off the race.
Rain was obviously a disappointment for the team, the track, and the series, but calling off the race was the right thing to do. Now the team will prepare for their trip for the next rounds of the Spring Nationals in Brasstown, North Carolina and Rome, Georgia.
